Here Are The 10 Safest And Most Peaceful Places To Live In Montana
Montana is known as the “Last Best Place” for a reason—statistically speaking, it’s a very safe place to live. In certain areas, you’re more likely to have a dangerous encounter with wildlife than another human. Cities and towns all across the state have a lower crime rate than other parts of the country. According to Safewise.com, these are the 10 safest places in Montana, based on crime stats in cities with populations over 1,500:
1. Colstrip
This old coal mining town is located east of Billings in Rosebud County. This quiet spot on the map has a violent crime rate of just .88 out of 1,000 residents.
2. East Helena
This charming city is rich in state history—in the 1870s, it was on the stagecoach route between Helena and several gold camps in the Big Belt Mountains. With a low crime rate and beautiful landscapes, East Helena is a peaceful place to live.
3. Livingston
You’ll find boutiques, cafes and a big rodeo scene in picturesque Livingston. You won’t find much violent crime, with a rate of 3.42 out of 1,000 residents reporting incidents.
4. Miles City
If you desire a quiet, low key place to live, head to Miles City. Their violent crime rates and property crime rates are both very low, and the atmosphere is relaxed (assuming you’re not at the rodeo!).
5. Columbia Falls
With a violent crime rate of just .84 per 1,000 residents, Columbia Falls is one of the statistically safest cities on this list. Plus, it’s located in the scenic Flathead County, so you’ll never tire of beautiful views.
6. Libby
There might not be much going on in Libby, but for those who call it home, the peace and quiet is a dream come true. The city has a violent crime rate of 1.5 incidents per 1,000 residents.
7. Dillon
With a property crime rate of 10.38 incidents per 1,000 residents, Dillon is full of unlocked doors and trusting neighbors. It’s also full of history—as an old railroad and mining town, walking through its downtown area feels like stepping back in time.
8. Glasgow
Property crime and violent crime rates are incredibly low in this small northeastern Montana town. The first “tourists” to this region were members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition!
9. Conrad
With a violent crime rate of just 3.3 per 1,000 residents, Conrad is a very safe city. The Heart of the Golden Triangle has a strict 9 PM curfew for its younger residents, minimizing the temptation to get into trouble.
10. Lewistown
A violent crime rate of just 2.88 incidents per 1,000 residents and a low property crime rate makes Lewistown as safe to live in as it is beautiful. It’s no surprise that people who reside in this Central Montana city seem very happy.
We know this is just a small sample of Montana’s safe cities. What would you add to the list?
